WHY           President Trump imposed tariffs on steel imports under the premise of “protecting U.S. national security” with the goal of increasing capacity utilization among U.S. steel producing companies. Unfortunately, the Section 232 trade action will actually have a negative impact on steel capacity utilization while penalizing America’s small manufacturers and their workers in the process.

Drawing from a newly released report, economist John Martinwill reveal the downward effect of tariffs on steel capacity utilization on the sector. Economist Laura Baughmanwill detail the decline in U.S. manufacturing jobs that result from the Section 232 tariffs. Troy Roberts, CEO of Qualtek Manufacturing in Colorado Springs, Colorado, will describe the threat that cost increases for steel pose to U.S. manufacturers.

The event will also mark the launch of the Coalition of American Metal Manufacturers and Users, comprised of small and medium U.S. manufacturing companies united in an effort to oppose the 25% tariff on steel imports.

WHY              President Trump’s Section 232 tariffs on imported steel and aluminum have already created significant collateral damage for U.S. industries. American ports and steel importing companies are seeing throughput decline sharply. Meanwhile, U.S. steel-using manufacturers are  encountering product price increases of 50% or more and are experiencing  difficulty in obtaining the steel they need, regardless of whether they buy domestic-sourced or imported steel.

This briefing will announce the launch of a legal challenge that seeks to remedy a situation that is bad for the American economy and American workers alike. The legal action will commence Wednesday morning, with attorneys available at the press conference to describe and discuss this critically important, first-of-its-kind initiative.
